Targeting which families see an event

How the Audience picker scopes events to a den, a patrol, or the whole troop.

By default events are troop-wide — they show up on every family's calendar. The Audience picker lets you narrow that to a single den (Cub Scouts) or a single patrol (Scouts BSA).

The picker

In the event form, Audience is a dropdown. The options depend on your troop's program:

  • Troop-wide (default) — every family sees it.
  • Dens (Cub Scouts only) — Lion Den, Tiger Den, Wolf Den, Bear Den, Webelos Den, AOL Den. Pick one.
  • Patrols (Scouts BSA only) — every patrol you've created in Admin > Dens/Patrols. Pick one.

You can pick one den OR one patrol — not multiple. For a "two dens" event, the cleanest options are:

  • Make it troop-wide (everyone sees it; dens self-select to attend), or
  • Create two events (one per den), accepting some calendar duplication.

What changes when you target an audience

Targeting affects two things:

  1. Calendar visibility. A Bear-targeted event shows up only on Bear-family calendars — and on every leader/admin calendar.
  2. Digest emails. The weekly/monthly digest only includes events relevant to each recipient's family. A Tiger family doesn't see Bear events in their digest.

Public site visibility is separate (the Show on public site toggle), but a public event with an audience filter is still hidden from non-matching families when they're logged in.

Tip: leaders see everything

Den leaders, assistant leaders, and admins see every event regardless of audience filter. The audience field is a family filter, not a leader filter — leaders need to see the whole calendar to plan around it.
